It is tempting to begin with colour, graphics or a single specification. A more useful shortlist starts with the rides you actually make most weeks.
A better starting point
Write down your usual journey length, road speed, weather exposure, luggage or storage constraints and how often you stop to speak with people. Then consider whether you wear spectacles, use an intercom or need extra airflow in traffic.
Full-face: maximum enclosure
A full-face design surrounds the chin and face area with a fixed structure. It is a natural starting point for higher-speed roads, sport riding and riders who prefer more enclosure from wind, dust and weather.
Consider it when
- You spend meaningful time at highway speeds.
- Wind noise and weather protection matter.
- You prefer a fixed chin section and fewer moving parts.
Modular: flexibility at stops
A modular helmet uses a hinged chin bar. Riders often value the convenience when talking at fuel stops or during touring breaks. The mechanism can add weight and complexity, so compare the model’s balance, locking method and declared approval for intended modes.
Look closely at
- Ease of operating the release with gloves.
- How the helmet balances with the chin section closed.
- Whether the manufacturer permits riding in the raised configuration.
Open-face: airflow and visibility
Open-face helmets are popular for lower-speed urban riding and scooters because they feel open and communicate easily. The tradeoff is reduced facial enclosure, so consider your roads, speed and exposure carefully.
Choose the amount of enclosure for the ride, not only for the five minutes spent trying the helmet in a shop.
Turn your needs into a shortlist
- Measure your head and identify likely head shape.
- Choose the helmet category that fits your most demanding regular ride.
- Compare fit notes, ventilation, visor, closure, weight and included parts.
- Try the helmet indoors long enough to notice pressure points.
- Keep labels and packaging intact until you are certain of the fit.
